Un cartouche, dans l'Égypte antique, était un symbole en hiéroglyphe dans lequel le nom d'un pharaon était inscrit au centre d'une boucle ovale en vertical avec un trait en bas (photo)ou bien en horizontal avec un trait à droite.
C'est notamment grâce aux cartouches que Jean-François Champollion a su décoder l'écriture des Égyptiens.
